Words of wisdom from my 8 year old nephew:

Two-way Street

Love, they say, is a two-way street
and I have blisters on my feet.
You're sitting there all smug and smiles
and telling me to walk the miles.
I pause to breathe and then we start,
despite my work, to fall apart.
You tell me that it's all my fault
and that I have a cruel heart.

... and i believe you.

FAKE!

The feelings of animosity burn within me
I know it to be dangerous, poisonous
but i don't care (Yes i do)
Who really cares about me?
The faces suggest they do
but the spoken words, the body language
They suggest otherwise
Anger fills my heart
They, on their lofty pedestals pretend to notice me;
pretend to care; pretend to know me
They will not, they cannot keep me away

(note: i actually wrote this a long time ago. there's a little more to it but i figure this is enough and not everything is applicable any more)

All American Rejects: "Gives You Hell"

I wake up every evenin'
With a big smile on my face,
and it never feels out of place.
You're still probabally workin',
at a 9 to 5 pace.
I wonder how bad that tastes.

When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.

Now where's your picked fence love?
Where's that shiny car?
Did it ever get you far?
You never seemed so tense love.
I've never seen you fall so hard,
do you know where you are?

And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying

When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell

Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself,
"Where did it all go wrong?"
But the list goes on and on.

And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying

When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell

Now you'll never see,
what you've done to me.
You can take back your memories,
they're no good to me.
Now here's all your lies,
you can't look me in the eyes,
with that sad sad look that you wear so well.

When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell

When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.

When you hear this song and you sing along but never tell
Then you’re the fool, I’m just as well, hope it gives you hell

When you hear this song I hope that it will give you hell

You can sing along I hope that it puts you through hell

Excuse me sir, is that a hole in your soul?

Okay, I guess that title is a little over-the-top. I just feel oddly like something is missing in my life and I can't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it's the very fact that my schedule for this semester is rather light. Or maybe it has something to do with that constant feeling that I don't quite fit in anywhere. I say "anywhere" but there remains that one exception: when I'm with my family. I suppose that's all that should really matter but is it a bad thing to want to feel like I have a place among my peers? Now you say, "David, what are you talking about? You have lots of friends and you're a well-liked and respected guy." I suppose there is some merit to that statement, but having friends and being liked and respected are very different from feeling a sense of belonging. Perhaps this feeling, this perception, is nothing more than a false sense of loneliness. I could go on, but I'm just not feeling it.

Robin Hood

I guess this one is going to be a little political. (You've been warned!)

I'm going to tell you about something that bugs the mess out of me. It's when political figures compare socialism to Robin Hood. I first noticed the fallacy in this while i was sitting on a subway train in Stockholm. There was some kind of political advertisement poster that suggested that the proposed candidate or party (or however it works in Sweden) would tax the rich and give to the poor. The catchphrase at the end of the poster said "upplev Robin Hood" which translates to "experience Robin Hood". The same idea has been pushed by certain political figures (usually Democrats) in this country and it is completely false! Although Robin Hood is a fictional story, we can learn a thing or two from it about how government should work. Nearly everyone is familiar with the phrase "steal from the rich and give to the poor" which is often associated with the story. But has anyone actually considered what that really means? There is a notion among Socialists that it refers to the government placing heavy taxes on the wealthy and giving that money to the poor. This idea is often referred to as a "redistribution of wealth". Was this actually what Robin Hood did? Let's analyze the story.

Robin Hood was a nobleman (the Lord of Loxley) who was ousted from his position by usurpers while he was away fighting in the Crusades with King Richard. Upon his return, he found a society in which the people were heavily taxed and the government officials were living a life of ease. From this brief synopsis, we can see that the "poor" in the story were the common people and the "rich" were government fat cats. Robin Hood didn't take money from people who worked hard to obtain wealth (which is what Socialists desire to do). He was stealing from the government and giving the money back the the people who were heavily taxed. Funny how people twist the meanings of things to suit there needs...

Chew on that one!
