this night i spend devoid of sleep
and without cause i start to weep
a broken dream, an empty page
the lack of thought has killed the sage
last night i dreamed of you and i
our rocket left the earth behind
the candle’s flame will light the fuse
and i’ll leave this tired world with you

Thus society falls to the sound of a thunderous applause...
I graduated from ULM on Saturday, 16 May 2009. I am now a bona-fide meteorologist. But what I really want to talk about is something that happened the day before. During the graduation practice the folks in charge shared a few statistics (number of graduates, number of cum laude, etc.). One such statistic was the number of female versus male graduates. There were about twice as many women graduating as men. This announcement was greeted with cheers and applause from those present but all the while I couldn't help but think, "Thus falls society to the sound of a thunderous applause." If you don't read any further you're probably thinking that I'm a sexist. Don't get me wrong! I applaud the fact that so many women are getting college degrees. The thing that worries me is where are all the men? Like it or not, if men stop getting an education our society will not last much longer. History has taught us well what happens when men stop caring about education. The Dark Ages ringing any bells?

Two-way Street
Love, they say, is a two-way street
and I have blisters on my feet.
You're sitting there all smug and smiles
and telling me to walk the miles.
I pause to breathe and then we start,
despite my work, to fall apart.
You tell me that it's all my fault
and that I have a cruel heart.
... and i believe you.
and I have blisters on my feet.
You're sitting there all smug and smiles
and telling me to walk the miles.
I pause to breathe and then we start,
despite my work, to fall apart.
You tell me that it's all my fault
and that I have a cruel heart.
... and i believe you.

FAKE!
The feelings of animosity burn within me
I know it to be dangerous, poisonous
but i don't care (Yes i do)
Who really cares about me?
The faces suggest they do
but the spoken words, the body language
They suggest otherwise
Anger fills my heart
They, on their lofty pedestals pretend to notice me;
pretend to care; pretend to know me
They will not, they cannot keep me away
(note: i actually wrote this a long time ago. there's a little more to it but i figure this is enough and not everything is applicable any more)

All American Rejects: "Gives You Hell"
I wake up every evenin'
With a big smile on my face,
and it never feels out of place.
You're still probabally workin',
at a 9 to 5 pace.
I wonder how bad that tastes.
When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
Now where's your picked fence love?
Where's that shiny car?
Did it ever get you far?
You never seemed so tense love.
I've never seen you fall so hard,
do you know where you are?
And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying
When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell
Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself,
"Where did it all go wrong?"
But the list goes on and on.
And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying
When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell
Now you'll never see,
what you've done to me.
You can take back your memories,
they're no good to me.
Now here's all your lies,
you can't look me in the eyes,
with that sad sad look that you wear so well.
When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well, hope it gives you hell
When you see my face,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you walk my way,
(I) hope it gives you hell,
hope it gives you hell.
When you hear this song and you sing along but never tell
Then you’re the fool, I’m just as well, hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song I hope that it will give you hell
You can sing along I hope that it puts you through hell
With a big smile on my face,
and it never feels out of place.

Excuse me sir, is that a hole in your soul?
Okay, I guess that title is a little over-the-top. I just feel oddly like something is missing in my life and I can't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it's the very fact that my schedule for this semester is rather light. Or maybe it has something to do with that constant feeling that I don't quite fit in anywhere. I say "anywhere" but there remains that one exception: when I'm with my family. I suppose that's all that should really matter but is it a bad thing to want to feel like I have a place among my peers? Now you say, "David, what are you talking about? You have lots of friends and you're a well-liked and respected guy." I suppose there is some merit to that statement, but having friends and being liked and respected are very different from feeling a sense of belonging. Perhaps this feeling, this perception, is nothing more than a false sense of loneliness. I could go on, but I'm just not feeling it.
